Level 3 Unit 1 Construction and the Built Environment Health and Safety (P1)

Scenario

The College management team are expanding the college courses for international lecturers and students. These lecturers will be visiting the college throughout the year and will need somewhere to live during the course of their visit.
The college management team has therefore decided to construct a building called the ‘Principals residence’ on the existing grounds within the Llanthony Priory.
The building is to provide a home to between 6 and 10 lecturers and must contain all of the facilities that a visitor would expect including cooking, washing and ablution facilities, living spaces and sleeping areas.
The facility must be sustainable and buildable.
The building is to be no more than three storeys high, and must not have a basement.
The building does not require a garden.
No parking facilities are required.
The budget and timescale for the project has not yet been decided.

Environmental Factors: Beginners Guide (Task for Level 4 Construction students)

The level 3 full time learners at college have an end of course assessment to plan and design a building that can be used as a place for overseas visiting lecturers to live.
This project has the working title of 'The Principals Residence'.
The level 3 learners need your help in order to understand how environmental factors will have and effect on their planning and design work.
For your information, the brief that the level 3 learners have been given is:

To help the level 3 learners you are to produce a 'Beginners Guide to Environmental Factors' booklet.
The booklet will have one topic per page:
The following topics must be included:
  • Model examples of the best use of sustainable materials
  • How the choice of construction form (framed, traditional, prefabricated) affect the design process
  • What are 'renewable resources' and why they should be specified in this building
  • Interesting examples of ways to use recycled materials
  • How contractors dispose of waste in safe and efficient way
  • The potential impact of the building on the environment
The best submissions will clearly link to 'time', 'cost', 'quality', and 'health and safety' at every possible opportunity.
Photographs that are used should be original or clearly referenced.
Diagrams must be original.
You will only be able to upload one document.
Three other HNC students (selected at random) will review and feedback on your work.
You must complete two topics per session in order to stay on target to complete.

Unit 006 Building Technology Assessment Brief

An example assessment brief


Scenario
The client (a large college) is looking at options for making the 'building for visiting lecturers' a ‘carbon neutral’ building. The layout of the rooms has been finalised and you are now looking at the construction methods for the elements of the building.
  • Option 1 is a traditionally built structure.
  • Option 2 is timber framed structure with a brick cladding
  • Option 3 is a steel framed structure with plastisol coated steel cladding
  • Option 4 is a concrete framed structure infilled with block and brickwork and finished in render
Task 1

The client on the project is looking at the specification for the building and wants to know the reasoning behind the design of the elements of the superstructure.
Prepare a briefing document for the client that explains the principles of the design considerations for each element of the superstructure listed below:

  • Floor
  • Wall
  • Roof
  • Stairs
  • Windows
  • Doors

The document will need to include illustrations (either drawn or sketched) for each element as well as written descriptions.
Task 2
Produce the following drawings, suitably scaled and annotated:
  • Drawing 1(traditional construction): A cross section detail showing where the wall meets the roof.
  • Drawing 2 (timber framed construction): A cross section detail showing where the wall meets the first floor.
  • Drawing 3 (steel framed construction): A cross section detail showing where the foundation meets the frame.
  • Drawing 4 (concrete framed construction): A cross section detail showing the frame meeting a flat roof.

All details must show both internal and external finishes that are to be used. These finishes are your choice.
